About Us

History

Our story began in 1998, when women lawyers across Africa came together to take a stand.

The African Women Lawyers Association was conceptualized in 1998 at a networking meeting of African women lawyers in Accra as a response to the need for an all-African Women Lawyers grouping committed to addressing issues affecting African women and children. It was also envisaged that the group would be able to articulate these continental concerns at international and regional fora.

AWLA Ghana is a voluntary organization made up of women lawyers in Ghana. Our Secretariat is housed at Anyemi Kpakpa Road, Accra, where three lawyers work full-time: an Executive Director who coordinates day-to-day administration and projects, a Technical Advisor who directs the Association’s activities and provides technical support, and a Legal Advisor who advises on the legal framework of projects and prepares reports.

AWLA Ghana stands in solidarity with every woman whose rights have been ignored and every child who deserves protection. We are committed to advancing the core values upheld by the African Union, the United Nations, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.
