What does AWLA Ghana do?

AWLA Ghana is a non-profit, apolitical, non-denominational professional association of women lawyers. We promote the welfare of women and children, advance the study of comparative law, and provide legal advocacy, community sensitization, and child rights programming across Ghana.

Yes. AWLA Ghana is registered under the Companies Code, 1963 (Act 179) as GA 4,863, registered on 12th August 1999. We are also registered as an NGO by the Department of Social Welfare as No. DSW/1364.

AWLA Ghana is a professional association comprising women lawyers in Ghana and across Africa. Membership is open to qualified women lawyers committed to advancing the rights and welfare of women and children.

AWLA Ghana focuses on women’s human rights, gender-based violence, child rights, domestic violence, property rights, and access to justice — particularly for vulnerable women and children who face barriers to the legal system.

No. AWLA Ghana has conducted programmes across multiple regions, including the Bono East Region (Techiman and Kintampo), the Northern Region (Tamale), and the North East Region (Walewale), among others.

AWLA Ghana was conceptualised in 1998 at a networking meeting of African women lawyers held in Accra. Mrs Betty Mould Iddrisu ESQ. is the founder and Life Patron of the organisation.

Yes. AWLA Ghana has partnered with Oxfam Ghana, WiLDAF, the EU’s ENOUGH! project, and STAR Ghana on various programmes covering SGBV sensitization and access to justice. We also represent Ghana at the African Union and ECOWAS levels through the broader AWLA network.
